The American list of the most popular baby names for girls for 2011 was recently announced. Sophia made its second appearance at number one; only the tenth name to ever make the top spot. For over a century, the most popular names have been Isabella, Emma, Emily, Jessica, Ashley, Jennifer, Lisa, Linda and Mary.
American parents are clearly favouring the tradition for strong feminine names featuring prominently in the list. The complete top ten from the US list are Sophia, Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Ava, Emily, Abigail, Madison, Mia and Chloe.
In Ireland, the most popular choice for baby girls in 2010 was Sophie, followed by Emily, Emma, Sarah and Lucy.
Other names to feature in the top 20 were Ava, Grace, Chloe, Katie, Aoife, Ella, Anna, Lily, Amy and Ciara.
Three names made their debut in the top 100; Lilly; Sofia and Lena, while Alicia featured the biggest rise in popularity by climbing 51 places.
The Central Statistics Office compiled the list of the top 100 baby names in Ireland. In general, the statistics shows that there is a wider variety of choice for baby girls names than for boys with 4,710 registered female names versus 3,866 male names.
In Ireland, 55.7% of baby girls are given a name that features on the top 100 list. The most popular name in Ireland also varies depending on location; Zuzanna was the number one name in Galway; Ellie in Limerick; Aoife in Cavan; Chloe in Donegal; Grace in Mayo and Saoirse in Sligo.
Lara and Julia were the most popular names for baby girls born to EU nationals residing in Ireland, while Sarah and Maria were the most popular names for non-EU residents in Ireland.
Name trend predictors have noted that many celebrities have chosen traditional baby names this year; Tori Spelling opted for Hattie; Ivanka Trump for Arabella and Victoria Beckham chose Harper.
Of course, not all celebrity babies were bestowed with normal names; Beyonce and Jay Z’s daughter Blue Ivy was one of the most anticipated celebrity babies of the decade; Jason Bateman’s daughter was given the name Maple and Jessica Alba opted for the name Haven for her baby girl, who joins her daughter Honor.
Name predictors also have noticed a return to vintage ‘grandma’ names such as Betty, Haddie, Blythe and Ann. Ellie, short for Eleanor, and Millie, short for Millicent, Amelia, Camilla and Mildred are definitely experiencing a surge in popularity. Celebrities are definitely contributing to this trend with Bruce Willis opting for Mabel, Jennifer Connolly for Agnes; Lily Allen for Ethel and Maggie Gyllenhaal choosing Gloria.
Another trend is the popularity for Jewel-inspired names. Ruby, Jade and Opal are making a comeback, featuring in the top 100 list. Jack Osbourne also recently called his daughter Pearl. In a list of baby names that will never go out of style feature; Anna, Caroline, Catherine, Claudia, Elizabeth, Jane, Rebecca, Julia, Sarah, Helen, Evelyn and Rose.
In a list of trendy American baby names feature; Maci; Guiliana; Tiana; Adalynn; Gia; Scarlet; Aria; Charlie and Annabella.
